Exotic Pets - Would You Like to Own One?

Exotic pets are unusual animals that are kept as pets, but what is considered exotic is constantly evolving. Some rodents, amphibians or reptiles are quite common now as pets, so they not really exotic any more.

These pets can be various species of reptiles or even rodents. However, an animal is best adapted to its natural environment. Many types of exotic pets need their environment to survive. Proper care and diet is needed for them to have a healthy life.

Exotic birds other than parrots can be kept as pets. An example is the Cockatoo, which is a protected species. The hyacinth macaw has such a strong beak that it can bend the bars of its cage, but on the other hand, it is the largest of the parrot species.

Guinea pigs, gerbils and hamsters are good pets. A flying squirrel does not really fly, it just glides. Did you know that they have been kept as pets ever since the Colonial Era. Hedgehogs come in 16 different species with different types of spines on their back. Two of these species are in fact very useful as pets because they can act as efficient pest control in your garden.

The Green Iguana is favored as a pet probably due to its bright color. American Green Tree Frogs can be kept in a terrarium. Snakes that are bred in captivity can be easily handled so they make an interesting exotic pet. Box turtles need special care because they are heavily affected by changes in the environment.

The Scarlet Hermit Crab is a popular exotic pet, and this is probably due to its bright yellow body. The hairy tarantulas are sometimes kept as pets, although their bite can kill humans.

Squirrel monkeys have the largest brain of all the monkey species, they are affectionate and social so choosing one as an exotic pet can be a good choice.

The white lion is reportedly the most expensive of the exotic pets. It is not a different species, just a lion with a recessive gene. Raising such a pet while still a cub is not very demanding, but once they grow up they can reach 500 pounds.

Once you decide that what you really want is an exotic pet, you should be aware that there are different laws related to ownerships of exotic pets in every state. Before buying an exotic pet it is best to do some research.

Some exotic pets can be quite cheap, but the expenses you have to make in order to provide them with proper care may be quite high. An iguana, for example costs just $10 to $25, while you will need $600 to bring it home with you and offer it a basking spot to keep warm. You need a UVB ray strip light, the fixture to put it in, the aquarium, the enclosure and quite a few other items.

Veterinary costs are significantly higher than for conventional pets and some pets can carry diseases that affect humans. On the other hand, some human diseases are dangerous for some animals.

There are plenty of reasons that can stop you from owning an exotic pet, but still if you truly want one it is best to do some research and find out anything related to your future pet before you buy it.
